Reading is one of the most valuable skills a child can learn, and the earlier they are introduced to it, the greater the benefits for their growth and development. Teaching children to read is not just about recognizing letters and words, it’s about sparking curiosity, imagination, and a lifelong love for learning.
Start with storytelling. Reading aloud to children, even before they can read on their own, builds their listening skills and introduces them to the rhythm of language. Storytelling also creates a special bond between parent and child, making reading a joyful experience.
Make books part of everyday life. Place storybooks where children can easily reach them, on a small shelf, in their play area, or even in the car. When books are accessible, children are more likely to pick them up naturally.
Encourage interaction. Ask questions while reading: “What do you think happens next?” or “How does this character feel?” This helps children develop comprehension skills and keeps them engaged.
Celebrate progress. Praise their efforts, whether they read a single word or finish an entire story. Small victories encourage confidence and excitement to keep going.
Be a role model. When children see adults enjoying books, they are inspired to follow. Reading together shows them that books are not just for school, they are treasures for life.
